Birding: Rocky Mountain National Park
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (March, 2002)
Author: Scott Roederer
Average review score:

Park Ranger Endorsement
This summer while stopped at an overlook on Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mountain National Park, we spoke with a Park Ranger who had Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park book in her vehicle. She told us that Scott's book was the best book on birding in RMNP. She uses it as a reference for park visitors who have questions about different birds and where to find them. It also is very well illustrated. I would definitely recommend this book for birders who visit this magnificent Park.

Rocky Mountain Birder's Bible
As first time visitors to Rocky Mountain Park, we purchased Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park in the park bookstore, but we wish we had had it to study beforehand. This guide not only focuses on the best locations for specific birds, but also provides careful directions (complete with odometer readings!) to trailheads that go well beyond the general maps available. We were also grateful for his strategies for avoiding the summer crowds, including when to arrive at specific trails and the order in which to bird them. Add to all of this Scott's warm, lucid style spiced with birding anecdotes that we can all relate to, and you get a bible for birding Rocky. Although we are certain that birding the park with Scott would have been the supreme experience, carrying his book in a hip pocket is the next best thing!

this is the most beautiful map I have ever seen
the quality of this map is amazing in that it is water proof and greatly detailed. Any one that likes the outdoors should ilnvest in such a treasure.

This is a facinating and educational map, excellent detail
I have yet to see a map so well done. The fact that Mr. Schulte began drawing these maps by hand makes them even more fascinating. Great detail, enjoyable trails for the novice trail blazer and exciting trips for the hard core. Great job. Hopefully we will see more types of maps soon

Broadmoor Memories: The History of the Broadmoor
Published in Hardcover by Broadmoor Hotel (December, 1993)
Author: Elena Bertozzi-Villa
Average review score:

good history
This book should be read by anyone living in the Pikes Peak region. It not only shows good history of the Broadmoor hotel, but it shows good history of the entire area (including the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.)

A wonderful historical account
This is a very well written book providing a wonderful history of not only the Broadmoor Hotel but the land prior to the building of the hotel. It also incorporates a great deal of the history of the city of Colorado Springs. It pays tribute to Spencer and Julie Penrose who were responsible for building the hotel and other personalities involved in the area as well. There are many photographs which bring the history alive. Absolutely worth every penny.

C Is for Centennial : A Colorado Alphabet (Alphabet Series)
Published in Hardcover by Sleeping Bear Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Louise Doak Whitney and Helle Urban
Average review score:

A Great Book about Colorado!
"C is for Centennial" by Colorado native Louise Whitney is a wonderful and informative book about the beautiful state of Colorado-written in the alphabetical letter format. This delightful book celebrates Colorado's 100 plus years of statehood with rhymes and facts about selected Coloradoans, historical landmarks, natural resources, and even the state song. The text is creatively and well written, the corresponding illustrations are well chosen, complementary, and beautifully done, and the entire book is a treasure to read. Each new alphabetical letter that is introduced is so interesting that you want to immediately turn to the next page to see what the following letter represents!

Many of the well-known sites (especially to visitors of the state) are represented, such as Mesa Verde, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Four Corners, and the Royal Gorge. But you will be surprised by the numerous additional facts about Colorado that you didn't know about such as herbal teas, the poetess who wrote "America the Beautiful", rodeos, the Pony Express, and even bicycles! Bravo to Louise Whitney for her authorship and extensive knowledge and to Helle Urban for her lovely and life-like illustrations throughout the book and the cover. You can really see in reading Whitney's creative work that she holds Colorado close to her heart.

This book is not only for children of all ages; adults will also enjoy the illustrations and facts about Colorado. It is a real treat to sit back and read about a state well traveled and loved by many. "C is for Centennial" is a splendid book that needs to be in homes and on the shelves of school and community libraries. It will prove to be a valuable resource book for students who may be assigned the task of writing a state report in their classrooms.

Beautiful Book about Beautiful Colorado
This book is just wonderful. I loved reading it and enjoyed the illustrations. The illustrator got the feel of Colorado just right. Younger children will love the rhyming couplets, and will try to memorize them on the spot. Middle school children will find the sidebar texts interesting and full of fun facts about Colorado. As a Colorado resident, I especially enjoyed discovering the places and people the author featured. As an educator I feel this book would be a great addition to children's non-fiction collections at home and school and will appeal to kids ages 5-14.

Colorado Bed & Breakfast Cookbook : A Select Recipe Collection
Published in Spiral-bound by Peppermint Pr (November, 1996)
Authors: Carol Faino and Doreen Hazledine
Average review score:

This is a new Christmas tradition, for sure!!!
I bought the book at a trade show, and the lady said, the recipe for "Upside Down Apple French Toast" would be a new Christmas tradition. Was she ever right!!!! It is so lucious, and painfully easy, that my family insists we have it for Christmas morning!! It's just not Christmas without it!! (And it's a secret Santa gift for mom because I can throw it together in minutes, the night before!!!) She's right,, this IS "required reading"!!!!

Outstanding cookbook and travel guide.
The Colorado Bed & Breakfast Cookbook is outstanding. It is two books in one, a travel guide to 85 B&B'S in the Colorado area, and a cookbook. The recipes are all tested by Carol Faino and she gives helpful hints in "Carol's Corner". Carol Faino & Doreen Hazledine are also publishing a Washington State Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, coming out in late March 1998. It to will feature 85 Bed & Breakfast in Washington State.

The Colorado Catechism
Published in Paperback by Samuel French Inc (September, 1993)
Author: Vincent J. Cardinal
Average review score:

It's Like Reading A Good Book
I don't read plays much but this one was recommended in reference to another book on this site that I really liked, so I ordered it on a whim. I loved it! It reads like a book. Somehow Cardinal's evocative dialogue creates such a specific world that I didn't miss the description or exposition of the narrative form. The characters are realistically drawn with great humor and compassion. The plot kept me thoroughly engaged and the ending surprised me but left me satisfied. If you like books like "Dry" or you are a fan of humor that's a cross between the old "Rosanne" show and Chekhov, you'll enjoy this play. If you are not a fan of reading plays but like a great novella, you'll also be pleased with "The Colorado Catechism."

Funny, Accurate, & Moving Story of Love in Rehab
If you liked "Postcards From The Edge" or "When A Man Loves A Woman" you'll love "The Colorado Catechism." The play stared "Wings," Tim Daly.

Ty is the handsome darling of the New York Arts scene and Donna is a midwestern divorced mom in a custody battle. Ty and Donna couldn't be less alike, except that they are both in rehab in last ditch efforts to salvage their lives.
In a series of laugh out loud scenes, Ty and Donna support and complicate eachother's recovery while trying to hide their relationship from Rehab director Roger, "the sex sonar." The last moments of this story may be the most moving you'll ever read.
It's a very accurate picture of recovery, rehab, and the complexities of love. A great, no preaching, read for people in recovery and a clear snap shot for people who want to understand them.

Colorado Fourteeners Grand Slam
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (July, 1991)
Author: Roger Edrinn
Average review score:

Beautiful book, great information
This book contains the best photos of all the Fourteeners we have seen. It's very readable. Its ratings are extremely helpful. It does not provide detailed hiking directions. Rather, it helps you choose among the Fourteeners for priorities to climb.

Spectacular Mountain Photography!
Roger Edrinn takes the most spectacular photographs I've seen of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks. I highly recommend getting this picture book if you can find a copy. He photographs the peaks with a climber's eye, and often captures unique perspectives of the peaks. I especially like his photo of mountain goats crossing the narrow catwalk on Mount Eolus -- an event that I was fortunate enough to experience firsthand on my own hike of the peak.

Colorado II
Published in Hardcover by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (October, 1987)
Authors: David Muench, Ann Zainger, and David Meunch
Average review score:

Not Muench's Best, But...
I believe that some of Muench's more recent work is better than this. However, that being said, this is still the best Colorado photography book I have seen. So if you're looking for Muench's best work, I'd recommend Ancient America, Nature's America, or Plateau Light. If you're looking for the best book (to date) on Colorado, I'd buy this one.

Colorado II
This is a beautiful coffee table book. The photos do justice to breath-taking Colorado. Great gift!
